2 . There is no public library in Aden. The
want of such an institution is greatly felt.
3 . The horse conveyances in Aden are very unsatisfactory. The horses
are ill-fed and overdriven and the carriages kept i n a
Public Conveyances. ver y r j c ketty condition, in spite of all the attention
paid to them. They have been tolerated so long for want of a better substitute.
Messrs. Cowasji Dinshaw & Bros, have started a regular motor service of 6
cars between Steamer Point and Crater but the results are not encouraging.
A scheme for the construction of a steam tramway between Tawahi and Crater
with a branch to Shaikh Othman is still under consideration and will prove
very remunerative.
4 . The roads in Aden are not good. They are narrow with many steep
gradients. Though there is plenty of rock in Aden,
good stone for metalling purposes is difficult to

5. Shaikh Othman was purchased with the object of settling there the
surplus population of the Peninsula; but owing to its
inaccessibility and its unhealthiness which is due to
