comprising all the territory to the south of this line inclusive of the Hadramouth.
Statements showing the principal tribes and the names of Chiefs in subordinate
alliance with the British Government are attached (Appendices 2 and 3). The
Chiefs who are allowed salutes are the followingThe Abdali, the Fadthli and
Kaiti. The first named possesses great influence in the Hinterland and
continues to render valuable assistance to Government.
CHAPTER III.
Administration of the Land.
The Bombay Land Revenue Code, 1879, is not in force in Aden
Land is not sold. Sites for buildings and gardens"
Land Kevenue. are gran ted in perpetuity, and sites for stacking coal
and salt, for beaching boats, for ships and for work-shops, etc., are given on
leases for a term of 99 years on payment of quit-rent as follows :—

2 . The question of the sale of occupancy rights
is still under the consideration of Government. ^
3. A fairly large plot at Tawahi has been reclaimed from the sea by the
Buildine- sites Port Trust and another plot has now been reclaimed
g ‘ by the Aden Settlement. There is some demand for
building on the Port Trust reclamation, but the purpose to which it is to be
utilised has not yet been determined by the Trustees of the Port pending the
settlement of the question of the sale of occupancy rights. At Shaikh Othman
there is plently of land fit for building, but no hopes of its being occupied on a
large scale can be entertained until there is a quicker means of communication
between it and the peninsula than the ordinary hackney carriage.
Proposals for the establishment of a tramway connection with Shaikh
Othman are still under consideration. The potentialities of Shaikh Othman
