29 The number of documents registered this year is almost the same as

is chiefly in documents other than sale-deeds and mortgages registered. The
year’s receipts and expenditure amounted to Rs. 2 , 11 / and Rs. 1,830 as
compared with Rs. 2,886 and Rs. 1,819 respectively in the preceding year.
30. Seven bills of exchange and two pronotes were protested under the
Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, The fees received on this account
amounted to Rs. 65.
31. No birth or death was registered. One marriage was registered
under Act XV of 1865 and none under Act III of 1872.
32. The Executive Committee of the Aden Settlement performs all the
duties which municipalities perform in India. Thpir.

Regulation, VII of 1900, and the rules framed thereunder, and are subject to the
control of the Resident. Mr. T. B, Robertson, Bombay Public Works Depart
ment Engineer, has been appointed as Chairman of this body. The income and
expenditure of the Settlement Fund amounted to Rs. 3,53,080 and Rs. 3,85,978
as compared with Rs. 3,40,292 and Rs. 3,23,072 respectively in the preceding
year, leaving a surplus of Rs. 64,586 on the 31st March 1911.
The increase of revenue at Aden was chiefly due to the sale to Government
of the Settlement bungalow and garden at Shaikh Othman and to the
sale of King Edward VIPs Charitable Dispensary building to the Dispensary
Committee.
The decrease in revenue at Shaikh Othman on the other hand is attribut
able to the quit-rent on the new salt-works not being credited to the Aden
Settlement.
33. The considerable number of public works undertaken during the year
and the large expenditure on works begun last year were the cause of the
increase of expenditure in Aden.
Of these public works few call for remarks, but it is worth noting that
two more sweeper passages were made at a cost of Rs. 4,410 and there is still
much to be done in this respect. The Crater dhobiwdda was improved at a
cost of Rs. 3,616. An item of Rs. 3,855 is due to the re-building of the
front wall of the market and a similar sum was spent in providing quarters for
the Settlement sweepers.
34. Reclamation in Church Bay has been nearly completed, the expendi
ture thereon this year being Rs. 15,656, making the total cost of this work
Rs. 51,148 up to 31st March 1911.
A gymkhana for officers’ use in the Crater was begun by the Settlement
+° ^ eventually exchanged for the Racquet Court building, which it is proposed

is Rs. 3,543.
Government having taken over the management of the Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. schools
