Hospitals and Dispensaries. tbe g arr i son there are two hospitals and 3 dispensa°
ries in Aden.
These are:—
( 1 ) The European General Hospital.
(2) The Civil Hospital.
( 3 ) The King Edward YIT’s Charitable Dispensary.
( 4 ) The Shaikh Othman Dispensary.
( 5 ) The Bai Jerbai Charitable Dispensary.
There is a small-pox hospital at Maala where a grant-in-aid dispensary i s
also kept.
EuTOjpvcM General Hospitals This hospital is at Steamer Boint and is in
charge of a commissioned officer of the Indian Medical Service, who is Civil
Surgeon for this part of the Settlement, Port Health Officer and Civil Admin
istrative Medical Officer. The cost of the establishment and maintenance of
this hospital is defrayed by Government and amounted to Bs. 7,527 in 1910-11.
The chief immates of the hospital are seamen, both British and foreign. 2 , 883 *
out-door and 272 in-door patients were treated at this hospital in 1910-11,
Of the latter, 241 were discharged, 12 absented, 14 died and 5 remained under
treatment. The average daily attendance of in-door patients was 9‘9 and of
out-door 2P9.
Civil Hospital .—This hospital is situated in the Crater in the centre of the
town and is well attended. It is in charge of an officer of the Indian Medical
Service. It was built by voluntary subscriptions in 1860 ; the establishment is
kept up by Government and other expenses are met by the Aden Settlement.
The number of patients treated at this hospital during 1910-11 was 1413*
in-door and 7,240 out-door; out of the former 646 were discharged,’ 74
absented, 51 died and 642 remained under treatment. The average daily^attend-
ance was 51*2 in-door and 52 out-door.
The King Edward VIEs Charitable Dispensary .—The designation of the
.... dispensary was altered from “ The Prince of Wales

t Edward VITs Charitable Dispensarv, Aden ” from the
1 st of November 1910 in accordance with Government Eesolution No. 4464,
dated the 15th September 1910, General Department.
This alteration was made at the request of certain members of the
Dispensary Committee with a view to better connect the institution with the
name of His late Imperial Majesty, the King Emperor Edward VII, in honour
of whose visit in 1875 this Charitable Dispensary was established by his
subjects in Aden and thus locally to secure a permanent and lasting memorial
in commemoration of His Majesty the late King Emperor’s revered name and
. s instlt ution was established by public subscription in 1875 and
now investe funds amounting to over Bs. 50,000. It is maintained by
interest on invested funds by a yearly grant-in-aid of Rs. 2,500 from the A(
