Miscellaneous.
1 . The census of Aden and its dependencies was taken on the night of the
10th March 1911. The total population of the
Census. Settlement, including Perim and shipping, was 46,165
in 1911 as against 43,974 in 1901.
2 . There is no large printing press in Aden. Work on a very limited
scale is done by the Aden Special Prison Press bv

Press and newspapers. Messrs. Cowasji Dinshaw & Bros., Pallonji Dinshaw,
and Howard and Company. The want of a good press both for English and
vernacular work is generally felt. No newspaper is printed in Aden, but ‘local
correspondents occasionally send news to the Times of Indio, and other Bombay
papers, as also to some Cairo and English papers.
3. A public library in Aden is a desideratum.

4 . The horse conveyances in Aden are very unsatisfactory. The horses
... are ill-fed and overdriven and the carriages kept in
a very ricketty condition m spite of all the attention
paid to them. They have been tolerated so long for want of a better substitute.
Messrs. Cowasji Dinshaw & Bros, who started a regular motor service discon
tinued it as the results were not encouraging. A scheme for the construction
of a steam tramway between Tawahi and Crater with a branch to Shaikh
Othman is still under consideration and will prove very remunerative. A still
better scheme would be an electric railway.
5. The roads in Aden are not good. They are narrow with many steep
gradients. Though there is plenty of rock in Aden,
good stone for metalling purposes is difficult to abtain

and there is of course no earth. The roads are therefore very gritty and easily
crumble.
6 . Shaikh Othman was purchased with the object of settling there the
"— 1 ”" 1 * " 4 ’ : — '— 1 ~ - but owing to
its inaccessibility and its unhealthiness which is due
to its contaminated water-supply and want of a drainage system, it has so far
tailed to become a popular settlement. The work of draining the place is in
progress and with communications of a modern order Shaikh Othman will be a
healthy suburb.
7. The roads are at present very badly lit with old-fashioned kerosine
Lighting. lamps. The necessity for an improved system of
lighting is unquestionable. When financial circum
stances permit the Executive Committee propose dealing with this subject.
8 . A godown for the storage of dangerous petroleum has been built on the
Petroleum godowns.
Isthmus. The question of the construction of a
godown for non-dangerous petroleum is still under
consideration.
