I have the honour to submit the Administration Report of the Settlempnf
of Aden for the year ending with the 31st March 3913. ^
2. Major-General Sir James A. Bell, K.C.V.O., held charge of the
Chauge, in office. from ^ April 1912 to the 30th April
C g . 1$12 and again from the 14th October 1912 to the
end of the financial year. Major J. K. Condon and myself acted for him from
the 1st May to the 7th July and from the 8th July to the 13th October, respec
tively. The names of the other gazetted officers of this Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. for the year
under report are given in Appendix I. The R.I.M.S. “ Dalhousie” performed
the station duties under my orders from the 19th July to the 30th October 1912
and again from 24th February to 31st March 1913. There was no ship on the
station during the intervening periods.
3. His Excellency the Right Honourable Lord Willingdon, G.G.I.E.,
landed at Aden en route to India on the 30th March 1913 and received at the
Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. the respects of the Abdali Sultan, Sir Ahmed Fadthl, K. C. S. I., of
Lahej and of some of the leading Government officers and private gentlemen of
Aden.
CHAPTER II.
General and Political.
1. The Settlement of Aden comprises the following divisions:—(l)the
Men Gereral peninsula and isthmus or Aden proper, which has an
area of about 21 square miles and a population of
36,876 souls ; (2) Sheikh Othman inclusive of Imad and Hiswa, which has an
area of 39 square miles and a population of 7,656 souls ; (3) Little Aden, with
15 square miles and 334 population and (4) the Island of Perim, with 5 square
miles and 1,299 population. The total area of the Settlement is about 80 square
miles with a population of 46,165 souls. The gross revenue of the Settlement,
based on the average receipts of the Aden Treasury during the past five years, is
Rs. 52,82,162. 8 ^ J a ^ J
2. For legal purposes Aden forms part of British India and is under the

General Officer Commanding the Aden Brigade, with the assistance of four
officers of th® Bombay Political Department, one military officer in charge of
erim, one officer of the Public Works Department as Chairman, Aden Settle
ment and Port Trust, and one officer of the Bombay Provincial Police Depart
