iii ff in view the large increase shown during the past two years, mainly due to
the Italian blockade of the Turkish Red Sea-ports, the decrease exhibited this
year might have been anticipated. Another cause contributing to the decrease
was the famine and drought prevailing m many districts on the African and
Arabian Coasts. The total for the year under review, however, compares very
favourably with the totals for the past five years.
The chief industries of Aden are Salt and Cigarette manufacture. The
Italian firm of Messrs. Burgarella, Ajola & Co. have been doing a very profit
able business in salt manufacture at Sheikh Othman for many years. The
Bombay firm of Messrs. Abdullabhoy and Joomabhoy Lallji & Co. also manu
facture salt. The salt manufactured by these firms is not intended for local
consumption the monopoly of which is in the hands of Government who have
licensed certain salt pits to Arabs, who worked the pits before the monopoly was
purchased from the Abdali Sultan. About frds of these salt pits have passed
mto the hands of Messrs. Cawasji, Dinshaw and Brothers and Menahem Messa.
The cigarette industry is carried on, on a fairly large scale by Foreign Jews and
Greeks with tobacco imported from Egypt. Other industries, like house
buildings, mat-making, oil-pressing and boat-building exist but on a small scale.
8. No tenders for the lease of the Perim Pearl
Fishery were received during the year.
Perim Pearl Fishery.
9. The Assistant Commanding Royal Engineer, who is both the Executive
and Superintending Engineer of this Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. , spent
Public Works. 23,781 on Provincial Major Works, Rs. 6,320 on
Provincial Minor Works, and Rs. 5,743 on Imperial Civil IVlinor Works. A
sum of Rs. 12,942 under Imperial Major Works was spent in repairs.

Appendix XXY shows the number of registered and insured articles,
ordinary and value-payable parcels posted and insured.
Post Offices. Inland Money Orders to the value of Rs. 6,73,464 were
issued and fetched Rs. 7,370 as commission. The number of British Postal
Orders issued were to the extent of Rs. 99,414. Rs. 2,25,646 were deposited in
the Savings Bank against Rs. 2,28,300 in the previous year. The amount with
drawn was Rs. 1,36,154 against Rs. 1,50,661 in 1912-13.
CHAPTER YI.
Revenue and Finance.
1. A statement showing the receipts and disbursements at the Government

2. A statement showing the receipts, charges and balances of the Local
Eunds at Aden, including the Port Trust and the
Local Funds. Aden Settlement Eunds, is also attached (Ap
pendix XXII {a)).
3. The receipts from Bombay during the year amounted to Rs. 8,80,000
and other receipts Rs. 3,80,595, making the total receipts Rs. 12,60,595. issues
were Rs.11,92,100, including Rs. 9,490 worth of soiled and mutilated notes and
those withdrawn under the regulations from circulation remitted to Bombay,
the balance in hand on 1st April 1913-14 being Rs. 70,240 and Rs. 1,38,735,
respectively.
4. The receipts of sovereigns amounted to 142,144| and issues
to £s. 1,43,228. No remittance on this account was
Sovereigns. made to Bombay. The transactions were the highes
on record in gold coins.
5. Supply bilk including telegraphic transfers to the extent of Rs. 25,35,000
