CHAPTER VIIL
Education.
1 The number of Government schools continued the same, viz., 5, of
which 2 were secondary and 3 primary. On the 31st
Education. March 1915 there were 117 pupils in the secondary

3M March mTTh^average daily attendance was 352-0. The total expen-
dntfon schooll amounted to^Rs. 27,209, of which Its. 5,000 was contributed
by the Aden Settlement.
2 The number of private schools decreased from 35 to 33 with a proper-
tionate decrease in attendance from 1,753 to 1,522. Twenty-five of the private
schools received grants-in-aid amounting to Es. 12,029. lucre is an ino.ease
of girls’ attendance in almost ail the schools.
3. The result of the examination of the Aden schools was, on the whole,
satisfaotorv.
CHAPTER IX.
Miscellaneous.
1. There is no large printing press in Aden. Work on a very limited
"scale is done by the Aden Special Prison Press by
Press and Newspapers. Messrs. Cowasji Hinshaw & Bros., Pallonji Hinsnaw
and Howard & Co. The want of a good press, both for English and vernacular
work, is generally felt. No newspaper is printed in Aden, but oca
spondents occasionally send news to the Times of India and other In xan p I
as also to some Cairo and English papers.
Library. 2. There is no public library in Aden.
3 . The horse conveyances in Aden are very unsatisfactory.^

4. The roads in Aden are not good. They are narrow with many s
