unsound quality.
Whilst the English goods imported have deteriorated, Russian
prints and chintzes have immensely improved in quality, &c. The
width required in the country, viz., 30 inches to 32 inches, is now
made at Moscow, and unless English importers cease from importing
their unsound goods, it is only reasonable to suppose that Russia will,
in a few years, succeed in ousting us altogether from the northern
markets of Persia, especially if the road at present talked-of is made
from Ardebil to the Caspian.
General Remarks.
General
remarks. In a former report (No. 18 Commercial, 1886) I showed that the
money actually received by the “ farmers ” of the customs, as far as
could be calculated, amounted to about 312,0001. Taking 4 per cent,
ad valorem as the mean of the customs paid, the value of the total
commerce might be ascertained by multiplying the above by 25, which
would give a result of 7,800,000l. Of this fully three-quarters, or say
• 5,000,000/., would be between this country and England and India.
I have seen it stated that British trade in the
