comparison with the year 1887-88 they are in excess of maunds 15,307, value
Rs. 1,80,750.
21. Grain, wheat. In imports of this article there is an improvement
of maunds 6,783, value Rs. 21,659, in comparison with the year 1888-89. The
trade rose from maunds 16,954, value Rs. 52,551, in 1888-89, to maunds
23,737, value Rs. 74,210, in the year under report. This increase occurred in
imports by railway as in imports by road there is a decrease.
22. Imports of Grain, other than wheat show an increase in quantity of
maunds 1,400, but a decrease in value of Rs. 2,268, compared with the year
1888-89.
23. In imports by railway there is an increase but in imports by road
the trade declined. The increase in imports by railway is owing to a good
crop in Afghanistan on account of seasonable rain, while the decrease in im
ports by road is due to the crop in Baluchistan having been damaged by
locusts and for want of rain.
24. The quantity and value of gums and resins imported during the
year under report amounted to maunds 5,944, value Rs. 28,107, against maunds
3,776, value Rs. 22,421, in the preceding year, the increase, which was wholly
by road from Lus Bey la Territory, being maunds 2,168, value Rs 5,686. The
reason given for this increase is that there being no rain the people of the
country, who were unable to cultivate their fields, took to collecting gums and
resins.
25. There has been an improvement in ghi amounting to maunds 1,211,
value Rs. 44,761, in comparison with the year 1888-89. The trade rose from
maunds 2,442, value Rs. 81,274, in 1888-89, to maunds 3,653, value Rs.
1,26,035, in the year under report. This increase occurred chiefly in imports
from Kabul Territory both by road and railway. In imports by road from
Kalat and Lus Beyla Territories there is a decrease. The absence of rain in
Sind affected produce and led to larger imports from Kabul Territory where
the pasturage has been good.
26. Imports of mustard and rape seeds fell from maunds 22,845 value
Rs. 91,242 in 1888-89 to maunds.10,061 value Rs. 42;878 in the year under
report being a decrease of maunds 12,781 value Rs. 48,361 chiefly in imports
by road from Kalat and Lus Beyla Territories owing to a bad crop. An im
provement is noticeable in imports from Kabul Territory by railway.
27. The quantity and value of spices other sorts amounted during the
year under report to maunds 6,121 value Rs. 79,573 against maunds 2,791
value Rs. 36,283 in the preceding year, showing an increase of maunds 3,330
value Rs. 13,290 wholly in imports by railway.
28. TTool,raw. There is an improvement under this head in quantity
of lbs. 892 but a decrease in value of Rs. 5,935 compared with the year 1888-
89.. The figures are lbs. 1,71,159 value Rs. 18,15,954 for the year under report
against lbs. 1,70,267 value Rs. 18,21,889 in the preceding year. In imports
by railway there is an increase both in quantity and value, but in imports by
road the trade declined. The demand for this wool in Sind for exportation to
the L nited Kingdom is year by year increasing and it will be so long as there
are facilities for cleaning, pressing and shipping wool direct from Karachi as
stated in last year’s report.
The trade in this commodity has morethan doubled of 1884-85.
