Mr. Thomson to Earl Granville.
(Substance received by telegraph, November 12.)
My Lord, Tehran, November 12, 1880.
I HAVE the honour to report to your Lordship that I yesterday received a
message from the Shah, through Mirza Said Khan, requesting me to convey to your
Lordship the assurance of His Majesty’s full appreciation ol all your Lordship s good
offices in inducing the Sultan to co-operate with him in the suppression of the present
Kurdish insurrection. His Majesty said that every effort was being made by Persia to
quell this disturbance, but that he still feared that the ringleaders might effect their
escape into Turkish territory.
His Majesty earnestly begged that your Lordship would strenuously urge upon
the Ottoman Government the necessity of fulfilling the assurances of co-operation
which they had already given, and for laying hands on the person of Sheikh Obei-
dullah, his sons, or any of the promoters of the outbreak who should cross the Turkish
border; and that, in case of their capture, such exemplary punishment should be
inflicted upon them as would effectually deter the Kurdish tribes hereafter from
causing similar disturbance to the tranquillity of the Persian frontier.

My Lord, Tehran, November 12, 1880.
I HAVE the honour to inform your Lordship that reports have reached Tehran
of the death of Prince Hamza Mirza, the Hishmet-ed-Dowleh, who was recently
dispatched to the frontier in command of reinforcements from here for the suppression
of the Kurdish outbreak.
A telegram was yesterday received by the Persian Government from Mirza
Hussein Khan, the Sepeh Salar, informing His Majesty of the relief of Souj Boulak,
which had been effected by the forces commanded by the Itimad-es-Saltaneh. His
Highness further reported that Sheikh Obeidullah's son, together with Hamza Agha,
the Persian Kurdish Chief, had fled from that district, and that a detachment had
been dispatched in pursuit of them.
An attempt had also been made by one of the insurgent tribes to withdraw across
the frontier into Turkish territory; they were, however, overtaken and brought back
by the Persian forces, with a reported loss to the Kurds of 200 of their number.

AM I to urge Porte to seize Sheikh Obeidullah and his sons, and punish them in an
exemplary manner ?
I feel confident they will not be disposed to deal severely with Sheikh Obeidullah
as such steps might lead to a rising of Turkish Kurds. J
