Consul- General Abbott to Mr. Thomson.
(Extract.) Tabreez, December 29, 1880.
-A AGA and his followers, endeavouring to cross the frontier into Turkey,
encountered a large band of hostile Turkish Kurds. A sanguinary fight ensued. The
Mangours and their Chief, driven back into Persian territory, fled to Serdasht
. x A letter has been received here from two Cazis of Soui Boulak, bringing
intesigence that Hamza Aga, with a large force, had besieged Serdasht.
The Vezir Fevaiet, on learning this, lost no time in dispatching from Souj
Boulak to Serdasht a regiment of regular troops, some militia, and two guns. He
also infor med.the Veli Ahd of the steps he had taken to oppose the movements of
Hamza Aga, in consequence of which it has been thought advisable, for the present,
to retain at 1 abreez the Shahsavend cavalry, who lately returned from the seat of
war on their way to the capital.

ACCORDING to intelligence received here, which requires confirmation, the
Russian troops stationed at Naktchevan commenced returning to their depts on the
24th instant.

(Telegraphic.) Constantinople, February 4, 1881, 1*45 p.m.
I HAVE received a telegram from Captain Clayton, in which he reports that Sheikh
Obeidullah is making preparations for fresh incursions into Persia, and that an Aide-de-
camp has been sent to him from the Sultan.
The Persian Ambassador here has inquired if I have been authorized to support his
remonstrances at Porte.

Sir, Foreign Office, February 5, 1881.
I HAVE received your telegram of the 4th instant, stating that you have
received intelligence that Sheikh Obeydullah is making preparations for fresh
incursions into Persia, and that the Persian Ambassador has inquired if you are not
authorized to support his remonstrances at the Porte. ...
I understand that the Russian Ambassador has received directions to join in such
remonstrances, and I have to instruct you, in concert with M. de Novikow, to support
the representations which are being made by the Persian Government against the
violation of their frontier by Kurdish bands.
