its poisonous effect. There is a speculative chance of obtaining oil by boring
near this area. As the structure is hidden beneath alluvium and I had not
time to make an exhaustive search for other exposures, I am unable to advise
respecting the most suitable spot for operations. ^ Whether it is a small
isolated dome with its centre occupying the summit of the hill, or whether
it is part of a larger N.-W’wardly continuing anticlinal fold, might possibly
be determinable by exhaustive search with the aid of an accurate large-scale
map. Its possibilities should be borne in mind while development proceeds
elsewhere. The N.-S. range of hills marked on the |-inch map as Khatun
Tappah does not exist; the physical features, unimposing as they are, follow
the normal N.-W.—S.-E. trend. There is a range known both as the Qarah
Tappah and the Jab-al-Kharabat, extending N.-W. to S.-E. near the village
of Kabarli. In the portion visited no Lower Ears beds were exposed, the
range consisting of an anticline of the Eed Clay and Sandstone series, with
gentle dips in each flank, and pitching from near Kabarli very gently S.-
E’wards. The incipient root-like concretionary structure noticed in the
sandstone on the N.-W. flank of the Jab-al-Hamrin, was well seen here.
The S.-W. edge of this range is covered with gravel, but whether any of the
Conglomeratic Stage of the Red Clay and Sandstone series is present, could
not be determined. The |-inch map, T.C. 250, served its purpose, and prob
ably served it well, but for geological w T ork it is inadequate in the extreme
and unfortunately often misleading.
MAR BEHKAM.
The Monastery of Behnam contains some beautifully intricate scroll
work dating from the 4th century A.D., and carved on limestone, which I
think better illumination will shew to be carefully selected blocks from the
Lower Ears. Gypsum is also used structurally and is occasionally orna
mented, but delicate carving has been discriminately restricted to the harder
limestone.

The volume includes a divider which gives the subject number, the year the subject file was opened, the subject heading, and a list of correspondence references by year. This is placed at the back of the correspondence.
