(1.) INTRODUCTORY.
The author was summoned from Persia to Baghdad by G.H.Q in order to
investigate the prospects of obtaining oil in the occupied part of Mesopo-
tamia.
All arrangements were made from Baghdad by the Deputy Civil Com
missioner, Capt. A. T. Wilson, c.m.g., c.i.e., d.s.o., to whom the thanks of
( " the author are due, as also to the staff and officers of the 14th and 15th Divisions
and the Political Officer of Khaniqin, Major Soane, from all of whom hos
pitality, assistance and protection were received, without which the work would
not have been possible.
The report herewith submitted is designed to set forth concisely the economic
significance of the information obtained in the field. Detail now omitted will be
contained in a subsequent report.
(2.) GEOGRAPHICAL.
The known occurrences of oil are in two widely-separated localities, namely,
Ramadi—Hit and Khanaqin—Mandali.
The bituminous seepages of Abu Jir, Jebhah and Ain al Awasil are 84 miles
W. of Baghdad; S. of the Euphrates, and that of Nafatah is 70 miles away, and on
the opposite bank of the river. Those of Hit are about 20 miles upstream from
Nafatah, mostly on the S. side of the river, though occurring on the opposite bank
as well. (See map T.C. 146.)
The Naft Khana seepages of paraffin base oil, or the Mandali oil springs as
they are more generally known, lie 78 miles W., 37 N. from Baghdad. (See map
T.C. 124 and accompanying sketch.)
(3.) STRATIGRAPHY.
The rocks exposed in the district are all of Tertiary or post-Tertiary age.
They consist of the following :—
Mesopotamian Alluvium
Recent.
Koweit Series )
Pliocene.
Baklitiari Series J
t Uppej; Group j
Ears Series J Middle ,, l
Miocene.
( Lower ,, J
Euphrates Limestone
Oligocene P
The Euphrates Limestone, as it is proposed to name the limestone which
outcrops at Hit, presents a variety of lithological characteristics over a few feet
of thickness. Owing to the strata being horizontal and the country, generally
speaking, flat, a section showing more than about 50ft. of strata cannot be seen.
A good deal of it is pure white, not very much compacted homogeneous limestone.
Hard stratified laminae occur, and a compact variety indistinguishable in the
hard specimen from the Asmari limestone of Persia. • In some places it contains
cavities half-filled with bitumen or bituminous oil, and in the vicinity of the
bitumen shows it is frequently impregnated with bitumen throughout. The
limestone is of considerable purity and of sufficient hardness to be a useful road
metal and building stone.
Owing to the horizontal position of the strata, there is no possibility of
measuring the thickness here, and no fossile being found, its age is allocated ten
tatively to the Oligocene period.
The Lower Ears Group is of great importance, since in these rocks, and pos
sibly to some extent in the Middle Ears, oil is found. The Group is dominantly
gypseous, with thin limestone bands, fine-grained sandstones and clays and shales.
The thickness of the Group has not been determined as a succession to the under
lying series is not exposed in the district, but at Qasr-i-Shirin not less than 1,800
feet of the beds are exposed, so that it is at any rate not less than that.
The Middle Ears Group consists of some gypsum bands, getting thinner
and less frequent upwards, with fine-grained sandstones, vari-coloured clays and
shales, and occasional thin limestone bands. It comprises about 400 feet of
strata.
The Upper Ears Group at Naft Khana contains not less than 3,500 feet of
beds of regularly occurring friable sandstones, very much false-bedded, alternat
ing with shales and clays.
