of a total burden of 13,535 tons, visited the port in

steamers and 11 in sailing vessels.

121. Certain additions were made in constructing sheds and store rooms
to the temporary batteries for 9-inch 12 ton guns, at
Fortifications. ^ expenditare of Rs . 4 ;836 .
(2.) The whole of the top of Flint Island has been cut off 35 feet above
high-water mark, and temporary battery removed, that surface may be
ready for future armaments.
(3.) The completion and construction of certain roads at Steamer Point
cost Rs. 4,826. ]
122. The old terrace roof of the European Infantry Barracks, Front Bay,
. , i . . m has been removed, walls rebuilt above verandah roof,
Accommodation of Troops. new roof of ^ and planking on the old gWers ^
concrete and plaster terrace and verandah roof of Taylor’s tiles has been
substituted at a cost of Rs. 14,028.
(2.) No. 6 Government bungalow has been reconstructed at a cost of
Rs. 2,820.
(3.) A voluntary workshop for the Royal Artillery, 20 X 20 X 12 feet,
has been built for Rs. 3,534.
(4.) Rs. 14,620 have been expended for constructing stabling and sick-
horse stabling for the Aden Troop.

Annual administration report of the Aden Settlement, providing a summary record of the main events and developments in each department of the Administration of Aden during the financial year 1878-79. The report is addressed, in a covering memorandum, by Brigadier-General Francis Loch, Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. , Aden, to the Secretary to the Government, Bombay, 21 May 1879. The report was printed at the Government Central Press, Bombay [Mumbai].

The main body of the report is headed ‘PART II’. The first part is not present. Part II of the report is divided into the following sections, some of which are further divided into sub-headings:

The report includes one appendix relating to political relations (with the ‘native states’ and ‘native chiefs’) (ff 173-174).

Tables indicating the number of square miles of the peninsula of Aden under the control of the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. , and relating to the civil divisions of Aden and the population is on folio 160. A table of contents listing the Chapter numbers and headings of Part II is on folio 161 (‘chapter’ is not used in the main body of the report). This is followed by a name, place and subject index are on folio 162.

The covering memorandum indicates that a Subsidiary Sanitary Report is also attached, however this is not present in this copy.
