sides, is said to be in communication with Karl Inger from the Webbe.
Colonel Swayne is retiring on Bohotle much hampered with transport of water
and wounded. He asks for immediate despatch of 600 reliable tioops to
Berbera, and also the remainder of the Keserve Battalion. X have repeated
this telegram to the Commissioners, East .Africa Protectorate, Uganda, and
British Central Africa. I proceed to Aden today in order to confer with
General Manning, who arrives there Sunday. Ends.
Second telegram —
Secretary of State to Resident at Aden, 19th October —
Begins. Secret. Reinforcements urgently required in Somaliland. Hold
in readiness to start at once a Native Infantry Battalion fully equipped and
rationed. Consult with General Manning, who is due at Aden on the 19th
October, and ask him to telegraph his views after seeing Mr. Cordeaux, who
is proceeding from Berbera to meet him there. Ends.
Please take steps to replace the Battalion at Aden immediately.

October. The War Office is not likely to give way, and analysis of honours
given, excluding those for services in the field, show that, during the past five
years, India has got her full share of honours. No military honours were given

of 1877. If there were one or two senior officers of exceptional
merit, I might possibly obtain some concessions for them from War Office, but,
except Sir Power Palmer, there is no one I know of who comes into this
category. The War Office will give Dawson a Brevet-Colonelcy. If you will
put this forward, I will not press the bestowal of Indian honours upon the
officers who accompanied the Indian Coronation Contingent to England.
