AGRICULTURE, WEATHER AND CROPS
Sholapur. In all other districts it ranged between one-half
and three-fourths of the normal.
Rice returned nearly a normal yield throughout the Konkan
except Kanara where the outturn came to about three-fourths
of the normal. In Broach, West Khandesh, Nasik, Satara and
Dharwar it yielded about four-fifths of the normal while in the
remaining districts of the Deccan and Karnatak it yielded
from one-half to three-fourths of the normal. Throughout
Gujarat (except Broach), however, the crop was definitely poor
and returned only between one-fourth and two-fifths of the
normal yield.
The yield of cotton ranged between one-half and three-fourths
of the normal in all the Gujarat districts and between one-half
and two-thirds of the normal in all the Deccan districts. In the
Karnatak, however, the yield was more varying, for whereas it
was three-fourths of the normal in Dharwar and four-fifths of it at
Belgaum, it came only to two-fifths of the normal in Bijapur.

only by 3'4 per cent, the outturn fell by as much as 171 per
cent, below the previous year—thus depicting the unfavourable
character of the season under review over a large part of the

of the river, there was a drop both in the area as well as in the
yield of the food crops—of 9°6 per cent, in area and of 24’5
per cent, in outturn—as compared with the previous year.
CONDITION OF THE AGRICULTURAL POPULATION
Generally speaking, the agricultural season of 1925-26 was,
so far as the actual produce of the land is concerned, decidedly
inferior to its predecessor. Though the outturn of crops was
generally up to the standard in most parts of the Konkan and in
the West Deccan and Karnatak, excepting in these favoured
areas, it was first rate nowhere ; while in most parts of Gujarat
and East Khandesh and in many places in the East Deccan and
Karnatak it was definitely poor. As a result, remissions and
suspensions of Land Revenue were found necessary in part of
Gujarat, the Deccan and Karnatak to ameliorate the distress
in these areas. Fortunately, as a result of the favourable nature
of the previous season (1924-25), ample stocks of food grams and
fodder were available and there was, thus, no actual scarcity
of food or fodder in any area during the year under report except
in parts of North Gujarat and Khandesh where scarcity of
fodder was felt later in the season. The scarcity, however, was

From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. during the financial year 1925-26. The report was printed at the Government Central Press, Bombay [Mumbai], in 1927.

The report is divided into two parts.
