IRRIGATION
GENERAL
The irrigation works in charge of the Public Works Depart
ment are divided into two distinct spheres, (1) Sind and (2)
Deccan and Gujarat. In Sind the rainfall is usually negligible
and the cultivation depends almost entirely on canal irrigation.
The canal systems in Sind are quite different from those in the
Deccan. They are mostly very large and with the exception
of a few perennial ones carry their supplies only during the
period of inundation which lasts for about four months, i.e., June
to September. For the remaining portion of the year most of
the canals do not flow and irrigation is obtained by means of
wells. When the Lloyd Barrage Scheme is completed,
however, it will be possible to feed the majority of these canals
all the year round. This project which is estimated to cost
Rs. 18*35 crores is under construction. It consists of a barrage
across the Indus below the gorge at Sukkur, three canals
on the right and four on the left bank each with a separate
head regulator. The barrage will under a system of scientific
control give the necessary supply to each canal no matter how
low the level of the water in the river may be.
Irrigation conditions in the Deccan and Gujarat differ
considerably from those in Sind. In this part of the country
rainfall is necessary for agricultural operations. The tanks and
canals provide irrigation to more valuable crops like sugarcane
and they are a source of water-supply when the rainfall is deficient
or irregular. Of the two large irrigation projects, viz., the Nira
Right Bank Canal and the Pravara River Project started in 1912
and 1911 respectively, the latter is practically completed and the
former is nearing completion. As the storage provided by the
Lloyd dam at Bhatgar for the Nira Right and Left Bank Canals
will not suffice for the full development of irrigation in the Nira
