Sir:-
With reference to your letter (P.5245) of
the 12th January last f regarding the increase of
the Consulate Escort at Shiraz ( and enclosing copy
of a telegram of c 12 th December 1916 from the
Viceroy reporting the increase from ten to twenty ax
of the strength of that body, I am directed by
Mr. Secretary Balfour to state, for the information
of the Secretary of State for India in Council,
that the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury have
now conveyed to him their covering sanction for
the charge against Imperial Funds of a moiety
of the cost involved in increasing the total
strength of the Consular escort at Shiraz from its
normal strength of ten non-commissioned officers
and men to one Indian officer and twenty five
attendants of other ranks, on the understanding
that the force will be reduced again to normal
strength as soon as the exigencies of the local
situation permit.
I am to add that Their Lordships have taken
note that the total cost is estimated at about
Sixteen thousand six hundred and sixty seven
rupees Indian silver coin also widely used in the Persian Gulf. equal to One thousand one hundred and
eleven pounds^for the intitial cost^ and Twenuy
