artillery and Royal Air Force, and is justified by the change in the status in Egypt itself.
With the grant of independence the potential dangers are obviously greater, as we shall
no longer be in a position to control the Egyptian Army.
14. However, if Egyptian independence develops along favourable lines and a
satisfactory solution is arrived at over the reserved subjects, some reductions may be found
possible at a later date. So far as such a matter can be gauged in advance, it is considered
that a maximum reduction of one infantry battalion from Alexandria and one brigade of
artillery may then be practicable.
