This is a companion volume to “ The Dawn of Civilization,” and carries the history of the
ancient peoples of the East from the twenty-fourth to the ninth century before our era. It embraces
in its scope the period of the sojourn of the Children of Israel in Egypt, and the historic connexion
between Egypt and Syria during the centuries immediately following the Exodus. As its title,
“ The Struggle of the Nations,” implies, the period covered was one in which the Great Empires of
the East were in perpetual conflict—each striving for supremacy. Syria, owing to its position on the
highway of the nations, became their principal battle-field. The recent discovery of a Stele of
Minephtah, in which the Israelites are mentioned for the first time on any Egyptian monument, has
intused a new interest into the Bible account of the Exodus. Prof. Maspero has brought to bear upon
this question his unrivalled learning. It is clear that the part played by Semitic peoples in Egypt
was much more important than was previously suspected, and that from the time of the Hyksos
onwards, Asiatics exercised a considerable influence on the Nile.
