Sir Martin Conway calls this book an appendix to that describing his first journey
in Spitsbergen. He cordially recognizes the services of his companions by name in the
preface, but kindly veils the identity of a hired Norwegian who was a hindrance. The
geographical results of the expedition will be published in full in the Journal.
The record of the journey is diversified by the historical associations of the now desolate
country, which was formerly a summer rendezvous of thousands of whalers and
hunters.
