Hints to Travellers.—The Seventh, revised, Edition, edited, under a Committee
of the Council, by Capt. W. J. L. Wharton, RN., F.RS. (Hydrographer to the
Admiralty), and Mr. Douglas W. Freshfield, See. R.G.S.
Price Eight Shillings; to Fellows at the Office of the Society, Five Shillings.
Instructions for Intending Travellers, under the authority of the Council of the
Royal Geographical Society.—Arrangements have been made for the instruction of
intending Travellers in the following subjects :—
1. Surveying and Mapping, including the fixing of positions by Astronomical
Observations. By Mr. John Coles, Map Curator of the Society. 2. Geology,
including practical training in the field. Under the superintendence of Dr. J. W.
Gregory, Natural History Museum, South Kensington. 3. Botany. Under the
superintendence of the Director, Royal Gardens, Kew. 4. Zoology. Dr. Bowdler
Sharpe, Natural History Museum, South Kensington. 5. Anthropological Measure
ments. Under the superintendence of Dr. J. G. Garson, Anthropological Institute.
6. Photography. By Mr. John Thomson, Author of ‘ Photographic Illustrations
of China and its People,’ and other works. 7. Instructions as to What and How
to Observe in the Field, from the general geographical standpoint. By Dr. H. R.
Mill, Librarian to the Society.
The Lessons are given on days and at hours arranged between the Instructor and
the pupil.
Tickets for the lessons must be previously procured at the Offices of the Society,
where information as to fees, etc., may be obtained.
Evening Meetings. —Papers to he read at the Evening Meetings in November :—
Tuesday, November 10. Address by the President. The Jackson-Harmsworth
Arctic Expedition, and the Story of the Last Year’s Work. By Arthur Montefiore
Brice. Monday, November 23. Two Years in Uganda, Unyoro and the Upper Nile
Regions. By Seymour Yandeleur, Lieut. Scots Guards.
Educational Lectures. —Under the joint auspices of the Society and the London
University Extension, Mr. H. J. Mackinder, M.A., is giving a course of twenty-five
lectures on the Geography of Europe, Asia, and Northern Africa, in illustration of
the Methods and Principles of Modern Geography, at Gresham College, Basinghall
Street, E.C., on successive Mondays at G p.m. The first lecture was given on
October 5. There will be two series of ten lectures each and one of five. To these
lectures Fellows are admitted free on showing their tickets.
Any Fellow resident in this country, desiring to have notice of the subjects of
papers to be read at the Society’s Meetings forwarded to him, can receive such notices
by post on payment in advance to the Chief Clerk, at 1, Savile Bow, of 2*. per session.
The Society’s House will remain open for the Convenience of Fellows on the
evenings of the Society’s ordinary meetings till 8.15.
