1897 ISSUE NOW BEADY.
THE STATESMAN'S YEAR-BOOK.
Statistical and Historical Annual of the States of the World, for
the Year 1897. Edited by J. Scott Keltie, LL.D., Secretary
to the Royal Geographical Society. Thirty-fourth Annual Publi
cation. Revised after Official Returns. Crown 8vo, 10s. 6d.
In the new Edition for 1897 the whole of the statistical and other information has been thoroughly
revised throughout. In many cases fresh matter has been introduced. In the sections dealing with
the commerce°of the various States of the World information is given with regard to the systems on
which the customs tariffs are levied. This information has been kindly supplied by the Governments
of the various countries. The sections dealing with the Navies have been thoroughly revised, so that
it is possible to see at a glance the actual strength of each of the great Navies. Prefixed to the
Year Book are a series of specially prepared maps and tables exhibiting the changes which have
taken place during the sixty years of her Majesty’s reign, and enabling a comparison to be made
under several important heads between the British Empire and the other great States. All the
changes made during the past year in political frontiers have been noted. By the publication of
this Annual a few weeks after the beginning of the year it is possible, in the case of some of the more
important States, to give the statistics of the previous year. This will be found to be the case in
the present issue. It is believed that no other Annual is of so much service to the statesman, the
politician, the publicist, the statistician, and all who have to do with public affairs, as the Statesman’s
Year Book. _ _
THE TIMES. “ Few books can be said to be indispensable. But among the limited number to which this praise can be
given room must unquestionably be found for the StatcsTnan's Year-Book, it fills a place in the reference literature of the-
world such as no other publication of its kind, in any language, quite occupies. It is not only that it finds an honoured
place on the table of every statesman and publicist; but from the fact that the information it contains is largely supplied
by the Governments of the different countries, it has attained a sort of official standing, so that its pages are consulted in.
every quarter of the globe, and its statistics referred to in despatches as entitled to unlimited acceptance. This high
reputation has not, it need scarcely be said, been attained in a day or a year, and, if the Statesman’s Yzar-Boolc now stands
at the head of the great army of works of reference which each year are poured forth by the Press, it is because its conductors
have never rested satisfied with the success they have obtained, but have always shown that every year shall be an improve
ment on its predecessor.”
