Inclosure in No. 38.
Extract from the “ Tarik ” of March 30, 1891.
(Translation.)
THE officers and privates of the new regiment formed from the nomad tribes
arrived yesterday (Sunday) in the Austrian boat “Diana” from Trebizond.
His Imperial Majesty the Sultan received them from the kiosk, in the vicinity
of the Palace, and sent Dervish Pasha to convey to them his greeting. He ordered
them to be quartered in the “ new barracks ” and their smallest wants to be
attended to.

My Lord, Constantinople, April 13, 1891.
WITH reference to my despatch of the 30th ultimo, reporting on the recent
formation of Kurdish cavalry, I have the honour to forward herewith a copy of
a despatch from Her Majesty’s Acting Consul at Erzeroum, inclosing a despatch from
Mr. Vice-Consul Boyadjian, containing further information as to the organization of
this corps, and as to the apprehension with which the measure is regarded.
I inclose also a copy of a despatch from Her Majesty’s Consul at Trebizond,
reporting the circumstances of the departure of the Kurds from Trebizond on their
nay to Constantinople.
Two extracts from the local press, quoting the official account which has appeared
in the “ Takvimi-Vakai,” are also inclosed herewith.

I HAVE the honour to forward to your Excellency copy, in duplicate, of a further
despatch which I have received from Acting Vice-Consul Boyadjian regarding the
Kurdish cavalry. , „ ^ .
Most of the Kurds left Trebizond last week for Constantinople.
Hussein Agha, of Patnoss, concerning whose crimes I have at various times
written to your Excellency, follows them shortly. , ,
I can onlv repeat to your Excellency that this measure of organizing the Kurds
is regarded by all Christians and foreigners, and by many Turks, with the greatest
dread and anxiety.

Acting Vice-Consul Boyadjian to Acting Consul Hampson.
Diarbekir, March 17, 1891.
IN a previous despatch I have had the honour of informing you that
auxiliary cavalry regiments from contingents, furnished by Kurdish tribes, are m the
process of formation. I have now the honour to state that Mustapha Agha, the ^
of Miran Kurds, has promised to raise a battalion composed of 300 men, and left a
fortnight ago for Erzingian, the head-quarter ot the 4th Army Corps, from whence he
has to proceed to Constantinople, and that another Mustapha Agha, of Severek, and
Ibrahim Agha Tamavi, the Chief of the Milli tribe, will soon follow, each one under
taking to furnish a full battalion.
