The existing State forests in Shahapur are reported to have
been carefully conservated and much waste land in Shirhatti
has been selected as fit for forest reserve and will be converted
into State forest if not taken up for cultivation this year. A
suitable establishment has been entei tamed to pieseive such jungle
as still remains.
Rs. 85,592 have been spent on works of local and general
utility during the year. They include an iron girder bridge on
the Miraj road, some new State offices, improvements to the jail,
and repairs to various tanks and roads.
The receipts amounted to Rs. 7,64,106, an increase of
Rs. 36,441, and the expenditure was Rs. 7,94,038 inclusive of
Rs. 1,15,000 paid to Government in part payment of the debt
of nine
lakhs
One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees
. The opening balance was Rs. 6,35,427 and at the
close of the year Rs. 6,05,495 remained, of which over four
lakhs
One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees
are invested in Government paper.
The number of births registered during the year exceeded
the figure for 1878-79 by 1,243. The number of deaths fell
from 6,031 to 3,957. Both results are eminently satisfactory,
and may be taken as evidence of the improved condition of the
people. Twelve thousand and thirty-five persons were treated at
the Sangli dispensary, an excess of 1,626 over last year's number.
The popularity and success of this dispensary has led to the estab
lishment of similar institutions at the head-quarters of each taluka,
five in all. These seem already to be popular. Two thousand four
hundred and sixty vaccinations were performed : of these 2,314
cases were successful, a great improvement on the results of the
previous year.
The schools numbered 45, one less than last year, but the
number of scholars improved from 2,061 to 2,205, of whom 85
are girls. Besides these State schools there are 28 indigenous
schools attended by 690 pupils. The schools are supported by
voluntary subscriptions, but will receive grants-in-aid according
to the results of an annual examination.
The Sangli Library, formerly maintained solely from State
funds, has been improved and added to by private subscriptions.

factory

at Lakshmeshvar as a convenience to the owners of cotton gins
in the Shirhatti District.

Annual administration report of the Bombay Presidency The name given to each of the three divisions of the territory of the East India Company, and later the British Raj, on the Indian subcontinent. , providing a summary record of the main events and developments in each department of the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. during the financial year 1879-80. The report was printed at the Government Central Press, Bombay [Mumbai] in 1880.
