obliged to employ 35 men more to guard convicts employed on
extra-mural work. Xt is reported to have improved much in
point of discipline and efficiency. The number of offences
reported to the police were 1 ? 430 as compared with 1 3 317 last
year. One thousand three hundred and ninety-seven persons were
arrested and of these 1,314 were sent for trial and 817 were
convicted. The value of property stolen was Es. 21,751-5-11,
somewhat more than last year; 48*52 per cent, of this was
recovered as against 38 per cent, during the previous season.
The total number of persons dealt with by the Criminal Courts
was 1,635 compared with 1,489 during 1878-79. Nine hundred
persons were convicted, and of these 391 were sent to jail, 83
persons were sent to the sessions for trial concerned in 29 cases.,
70 persons were awaiting trial when the year dosed. The appel
late work was light, only 13 appeals having been presented. Of
these in 7 cases the sentences were confirmed, in 3 reversed, and
3 cases were pending at the close of the year.
Including the Central Jail at Sangli 7 jails were kept up at a
cost of Rs. 14,295-6-11. Two hundred and twenty-four prisoners
remained over from last year and 973 were freshly admitted,
making a total of 1,197 as compared with 1,572 for 1878-79.
The daily average was 259, and 168 remained in jail when the
year closed.
One thousand three hundred and eighty-two suits were filed
during the year and 428 remained from the previous one,—total
1,810 for disposal as compared with 2,091 last year. One thousand
four hundred and seventeen of these cases were actually decided,
and at the close of the year arrears were 393. Results would
have been even more satisfactory had not the Court at Mangal-
wedha been closed for upwards of five months in order to
enable the Munsif and his office establishment to look after a
poor-house which had been opened in that town for the relief of
destitute persons. There were 154 appeal cases for disposal.
these one-half were decided and one-half remained in
arrears.
There was a slight increase in the number of documents regis-
eied. Receipts amounted to Rs. 3,625-10-3, or Rs. 367 more

The monsoon was generally favourable and the khanf harvest
bottom? however, was deficient. The generally
