The volume comprises correspondence, memoranda, notes, and other papers relative to the early years of the Bagdad [Baghdad] Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. . The majority of the volume consists of letters from Sir Harford Jones, Resident at Bagdad, to Henry Dundas, President of the Board of Control Formally known as the Board of Commissioners for the Affairs of India, it was established by an Act of Parliament in 1784 to supervise the activities of the East India Company. , with enclosures. The volume also includes précis of these letters, with an index, and other miscellaneous but related papers.

The volume covers a wide range of subjects connected to political events in Europe, Persia [Iran], the Arabian Peninsula, and Central and South Asia.

Arrangement

The first section, letters from Jones to Dundas, is arranged in chronological order, from the front to the back. The second section, the enclosures and what is referred to as the appendix, is arranged in approximate chronological order, from the front to the back. It begins with a list (folios 154-158) of appendices, each constituting a letter or similar document and given a number from 1 to 217. The third section, the précis, is arranged in approximate chronological order. The index is arranged alphabetically and refers to the page numbers of the précis.

Physical characteristics

Foliation: the foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the inside front cover with 1 and terminates at the inside back cover with 612; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. side of each folio. An additional foliation sequence is present in parallel; these numbers are also written in pencil, but are not circled.

Pagination: the file also contains an original pagination sequence.

The sequence contains one foliation anomaly, f 248a.
