Journal (compiled by John Carswell [ Chief Mate The sailor subordinate to the Captain. ]) of the voyage of the Phoenix from England to Fort St George at Madras, Bangall [Bengal], and Persia, and back (Captain Thomas Lambert), 1700-03. The Phoenix was at Gomorun [Bandar Abbas] from 25 April to 30 May 1702.
The Journal consists of daily entries recording navigational information, winds, weather, contact with other English ships, sightings of other vessels, commodities carried, and general remarks.
The Journal includes a pencil sketch of the Bay of St Jago [Santiago, Cape Verde], showing the fort and town, and the island of Fogo to the west, on folios 1-2.

The entries are recorded in chronological order from the front to the rear of the volume.

Foliation: the foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the first folio with 1 and terminates at the last folio with 180; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. side of each folio. The foliation sequence does not include the front and back covers, nor does it include the leading flyleaf. The volume includes a sequence of blank pages, ff 94-180, which have not been digitised.
