ver'd into his Hands would Cbnvince him clearly of the Truth
of what he laid.
The Grand Vizier had a jealoufie of this lecret Correfpon
dence before, but being no\v in a manner afiur'd in his fufpi-
tions through the Dilcoveries of the it may be rea
dily conje&ur'd to what a degree his paffion tranfported him
againft the Ambaflador of France, incens'd as he was already,
and boyling with revenge, efpecially being naturally inhuman
and bloody. However at this time he put a curb upon him
felf, and fliew'd more referv'dnefs and moderation then could
be expected from him.
M. de laHaye, who well underftood Defign,
and what his Errand was to the Court, and befides was well
acquainted with the Grand Vizier Difpofition, hifr Implaca
bility, and the Importance of the Affair, made no queflion
but the Intercepted Packet would put him to a great deal of
trouble and therefore he confulted with his Interpreters and
his Secretaries. Immediately the Secretary for his Ciphers
took fuch a fright at the Unfortunate Accident, that he re-
fblv'd to march off, well knowing that the up
on the like occafion of a Letter in Ciphers Intercepted, had
caus'd an Interpreter to the Venetia to be Drubb'd to Death.
Thereupon , addrefllng himfelf to M. Haye, faid he,
J am naturally fo 'very timorous, Drnb-
hing-Stich^, there is no fecret which
fore feenre me, or let me mahg my Upon which the Am-
baflador order'd him to be conveigh'd into a private Conceal
