qihe Travels of Sir John Chardin Perfia,
advanc'd to the High Dignity of Vt%ter. But the Am-
baffador ftillbelievd that his Fortune would be no better then
that of his Predeceffors, and that he had but a very fhort
Raign ■, but he was deciev'd ; for it fo fell out, that this
Vizier upheld himfelf in his Office, till his Death, which hap-
pen'd in the Year i <552. , • , r
So foon as he was advanc'd, every one pay d him their Vifits,
and made him their accuftom'd Prefents, and among the Reft
all the Forraign Minifters, except the French Ambafiador.
To which as they fay, he was adviz'd and feveral times moft
earneftly prefs'd; but his good Husbandry for the Nation was
fuch, that he would not be over-rul'd. However at length
percieving that Cuferly fix'd himfelf at Court upon the Ruine
of feveral of the Grandees, and that according to all outward
Appearances he was like to continue at length
he made him both his Vifit and bis Prefents.
But then the Vi%ier, hainoufly offended at his Remiflhels,
and the little value he had teftifi'd for his Perfon before, had
laid a defign to be reveng'd not only upon him, but upon all
the French Nation, And this in truth was the Source and Ori
ginal of that Mifunderftanding between and as
well during that whole time the Grand Vizier liv'd, which was
Twelve Years, as alfo during the Prime Miniftry of his Son
that fucceeded him. So that the feverity of the fW toward
the Three laft Ambaffadors of Haye, the Fa
ther, M. de la Haye, the Son, and and the
feveral Impofitions that were laid upon the for Twen
ty Years together, are to be Originally attributed to a particular
and Perf nal Enmity, notwithftanding all the Reafons after
wards pretended, of which the Principal and jufteit were the
Enterprize of Gigery, and the Succors giv'n to the and
the Venetians*
Nor was the Vizier long before he found an Opportunity
to Thunder forth his Refentments. Such a one, as he could
not have wifh'd for a better to advance his mifchievous Defign.
For then was the War very hot in and had fe-
cretly a {lifted the Venetians at the beginning of the War. Nay
more, it is faid, that M de la H had Inftrucftions to hold a
private C orrelpondence with the and to give 'em In
