The letter is a covering letter, relating to the case of a slave who had escaped servitude from Bushire and joined the Indian Navy, before returning to Bushire at a later date. Enclosed with the letter is an extract from paragraph 2 of despatch no.3 of 1857 (folio 172), from the Court of Directors The London-based directors of the East India Company who dealt with the daily conduct of the Company's affairs. , dated 2 January 1857, confirming that while the runaway slave stays in the service of the Indian Navy he is entitled to British protection, but in the event of his desertion he must depend on the laws of local government for his freedom.
