The most influential and important Arabic handbook of materia medica , written by the Andalusian botanist Ḍiyā’ al-Dīn Abū Muḥammad ʻAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad (ضياء الدين أبو محمد عبد الله بن أحمد; d. 1248), known as Ibn al-Bayṭār (ابن البيطار), Chief Herbalist (رئيس العشابين) to the Ayyubid sultan al-Malik al-Kāmil (reg. 1218-38). The text is here called the Jāmi‘ Ibn Bayṭār fī ma‘rifat al-adwīyah wa-khwāṣṣihā wa-manāfi‘ihā wa-maḍārrihā (جامع ابن بيطار في معرفة الأدوية وخواصها ومنافعها ومضارها; see colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. on f. 550r, line 10, transcribed below).This copy was completed 'in the late morning of the second Friday of the third tenth of Sha‘bān, in the year 925 AH' (= 29 Sha‘bān 925/26 August 1519), by ‘Alī ibn Ḥusayn ibn Maḥmūd, nicknamed Kamāl al-Kātib (علي بن حسين بن محمود الملقّب بكمال الكاتب; see colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. on f. 550r, lines 11-12 and 14-16, transcribed below).

الحمد لله الذي أقام بلطيف حكمته بنية الإنسان فأختصه بما علمه من بديع البيان و

سخر له ما في الأرض من جماد ونبات وحيوان ...

... ينمة الينمة معروفة بالقيروان وهي عندهم مختبرة في الجرا

وهي نبتة بيضاء ورقها أزغب لها ورق فيما بين ورق لسان الحمل البري وورق آذان الغزال

إلا أنه أصغر يخرج من ورقها في الوسط ساق طولها شبر وأقل وأكثر في غلظ الغرل وارق

Ruling: No ruling visible; 21 lines per page; vertical spacing 15 lines per 10 cm

Script: Naskh ; the scribe is ‘Alī ibn Ḥusayn ibn Maḥmūd nicknamed Kamāl al-Kātib (علي بن حسين بن محمود الملقّب بكمال الكاتب)

Ink: Black ink, with rubricated headwords and names of cited authorities

Decoration: Headpiece illuminated with gold and blue, white, red, yellow and greeen pigments; includes calligraphed basmallah

Binding: Western binding with boards covered with mabled paper; leather corners; white paper

Condition: Spine missing; boards detached; wormholes, some repaired

Marginalia: Some headwords added in margin by various hands, mostly (if not entirely) restricted to the first 74 folios
