Enclosures in Letter No. 5 from Sir Harford Jones, British Envoy Extraordinary to Persia [Iran], to Sir Robert Dundas, President of the Board of Control Formally known as the Board of Commissioners for the Affairs of India, it was established by an Act of Parliament in 1784 to supervise the activities of the East India Company. , dated 1809, consisiting of:

  • A copy of a letter from Brigadier-General John Malcolm, Envoy of the Supreme Government of India to Persia [Iran], to Sir Harford Jones, sent from Bombay [Mumbai] and dated 30 December 1808. The letter informs Jones of Malcolm’s intention to sail to the Persian Gulph [Gulf] and occupy the island of Kharrack [Khārg] as part of a new defence strategy in the region, and asserts that Jones should withdraw from Persia.
  • A copy of a letter from Jones to Malcolm, sent from Koush Khona and dated 7 February 1809. The letter urges Malcolm to refrain from hostile activity towards Persia or correspondence with provincial rulers, and reports Jones’s plans to proceed to Tehran.
  • A copy of a letter from Jones to Lord Minto, Governor-General of Bengal, sent from Koush Khona and dated 7 February 1809. Jones reports his progress towards Tehran and describes suspicion in Persia that Malcolm’s mission will incite separatism in the south of the country.
