- Content
Copy of dispatch No. 11 from HM Chargé d’Affaires to Persia [Iran], Henry Willock, at Camp Sultanieh [Solţānīyeh], to the Governor-General of India, Lord Amherst, of 22 July 1825. The letter details Willock’s conversation with the Prince Royal [Crown Prince of Persia, 'Abbās Mīrzā Qājār] and the Persian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mirza Abul Hassan Khan [Mirza Abu'l-Hasan Khan Shirazi], concerning the suspension of the mission of the East India Company Envoy to Persia, Lieutenant-Colonel John Macdonald Kinneir, to the Persian Court. Included in the discussion was the Prince Royal’s determination to send an officer to Bombay [Mumbai] to invite Macdonald Kinneir’s mission to approach Persia, as an indication of the sincerity of the Persian invitation. The letter also originally enclosed a translation of a letter from Mirza Abul Hassan Khan to HM Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, George Canning, acceding to the establishment of the mission (now catalogued as IOR/L/PS/70/42).
This document was originally enclosed, numbered 2, in Willock’s letter to the Secret Committee Pre-1784, the Committee responsible for protecting East India Company shipping. Post-1784, its main role was to transmit communications between the Board of Control and the Company's Indian governments on matters requiring secrecy. of the East India Company of 10 September 1825 (IOR/L/PS/9/70/39).
