Letter from Daoud Khan [Prince Dāvūd Khān Zādūriyān] to Abbas Meerza [Crown Prince of Persia, ʿAbbās Mīrzā A title of honour originally applied to princes, later to military leaders, and later still to secretaries, chieftains, and other ‘gentlemen’. Qājār] (IOR/L/PS/9/70/163 (A)), and an English translation of the letter (IOR/L/PS/9/70/163 (B)). The letter concerns Daoud Khan’s mission to Constantinople [Istanbul], including details of:
- Daoud Khan’s efforts to get passports and permission to enter Poland and his efforts to contact Prince Constantine [Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich of Russia]
- Details of the conclusion of peace between Russia and the Ottoman Empire, and the Ottoman efforts to muster troops
- The dispatch of a large Russian force from Crimea to Georgia
- A French offer of mediation in the war between Russia and Persia [Iran] in the Caucasus [Russo-Persian War, 1826-1828]
- Russian representations at Constantinople concerning the outbreak of the war between Russia and Persia, and the responses of the ambassadors there to reports of Persian advances towards Tiflis [Tbilisi].
This document was originally enclosed, numbered 2, in the letter of the East India Company Envoy to Persia, Lieutenant-Colonel John Macdonald Kinneir, to the Secret Committee Pre-1784, the Committee responsible for protecting East India Company shipping. Post-1784, its main role was to transmit communications between the Board of Control and the Company's Indian governments on matters requiring secrecy. of the East India Company of 23 December 1826 (IOR/L/PS/9/70/156).
