Content

This bundle consists of summaries, and partial transcripts, of secret letters received from the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. (1-2 January 1856, Numbers 1-4). The amount of detail for each entry therefore varies.

The despatches are concerned with reports of the capture of Candahar [Kandahar] by Dost Mohammad Khan, Amir of Afghanistan, and Persia's response. It also covers the state of relations between the British at Aden and the Foutheli, and contains brief reports of unrest at Mecca.
