all the treaties and engagements entered into by the Chiefs of Bahrein (your
ancestors and yourself) with the British Government and as the non-possession
by you of such treaties is likely to cause needless misunderstandings, I send you
herewith copies as per list of the most important engagements by which as
ruling Shaikh of Bahrein, you are bound to the British Government.

2 . Tiie General treaty with the Kings of Bahrein dated the 9 th
Jamad Avval 1235 A. H. concurrent with 23rd February 1820.
>. Engagement with the Kings of Bahrein about abolition of slave
trade from Africa in their country dated 22nd Jamad Avval 1263 A. H.
4. Supplementary engagement with the King of Bahrein about
abolition of slave trade entirely dated 15th Ramadan 1272 A. H. concurrent with
10th May 1856 A. D.
5. Current treaty of friendliness with the Kings of Bahrein dated 20 th
Zilkad 12<7 A. H. concurrent with 31st May 1861.

The papers are mostly copies exchanged between the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. , Foreign Office, and Colonial Office, and forms part of the interdepartmental discussion of matters such as: petitions to the British Government by the Baharnah community in Bahrain complaining about oppression by the Bahrain Government; Wahhabi influence in Bahrain and the protests of the Dowasir tribe over British-backed reforms in the country; the poor treatment of the Baharnah in Qatif by the authorities there; and Shaikh Isa bin Ali's memorial to the Government of India following his removal as the ruler of Bahrain.
