Your 195-S. 21st January Sitrah Affairs. I proceed(ed) to Bahrein
in H.M.S. “Crocus 5 * on 24th January returning 27th January. I
landed on 25th January and on (morning of) 26th January my arrival
having become known and fact that I have called Sheikh Hamad to see
me,

thousands of Baharnah shouting “ Justice”. I had a lengthy interview with
Sheikh Hamad and I think succeeded in frightening him thoroughly. He
promised to try offenders and give exemplary punishment to all convicted
whether they had been arrested or absconding. Sheikh Khalid was also sum
moned by Hamad and threatened that his allowance would be reduced ; he
asreed to quit Rifa and live in Muharraq. I have heard to-day that trial went
off well, so I hope my visit has been successful. Pull report will be sent by
next mail.

telegram No. 169, is very keen on levies as Corps will give him independent
backing and make his position much stronger. Even before it is trained actual J

Hamad’s position. It is in my opinion essential to success of reforms to
get Corps started forthwith. There is plenty of money available, so I earnes y
