700 miles (viz , 163 miles by water, and 53/ miles
or 37 stages by road).
Sections.
(a ) From the mouth of the Shat-el-Arab to Ahwaz
(see Route III., page 50). 163 miles by water.
Cargoes are landed at Bandar Nasri, 1 ^ miles below
Ahwaz, and transferred to Ahwaz by a short tramway
(see p. 17).
(b.) From Ahwaz to Shuster.
55 miles. 4 stages.
A fair mule-road. Water is abundant and supplies
procurable in small quantities.
(c.) From Shuster to DizfuL
36 miles. 2 stages.
Practicable for baggage-animals. Water and supplies
abundant.
(d.) From Dizful to Khoramabad via Pul-i-tang.
157 miles. 14 stages.
This is the most difficult section of the route, owing
-to the steep gradients, encountered while crossing the
mountains of Luristan. It is ordy practicable for pack-
animals. Water and pasture are abundant, but fuel and
supplies scarce, and the natives are hostile. A more
direct pathway, reported suitable only for infantry un
accompanied by baggage, leads due north from Ab-i-zal
to Khoramabad over the Kuh-i-gird mountains.
(e.) Khoramabad to Burujird via the Zagha Pass
(6,830 feet). 63 miles. 4 stages.
A rough mule-track. Water and grass plentiful, but
supplies cannot be obtained.
