a distance of 170 miles. Parts of this road
are described as very good even for carts.
(a.) From Kurghan Tapa a route, said to
be good and much travelled, runs to Karaul
Tapa, a ferry on the Oxus near Serai (not
shown on our maps but nearKanda Guzar),
a distance of 15 miles, from which Kunduz
(in Afghanistan) is 44 miles.
(If.) From Kabadian a route runs to
Takht-i-Kuva ferry (about a mile below
the confluence of the Waksh with the
Oxus), a distance of 29 miles, and from
which Kunduz is 60 miles distant.
(27.) From Faizabad to Kulab, rid Baljuan, is about
90 miles. From Kulab to the crossing over
the Oxus at Samti Bala the distance is 19
miles, and to Faizabad (in Badakhshan)
129 miles; the road is said to be fit for wheels
from Kulab, but not so between that place
and the starting-point.
(a.) From Kulab a route runs south-west
by Siab to Kanda Guzar (Serai), a distance
of 72 miles, and from there on to Kunduz a
further 44 miles. This is a usual caravan
route, and is shown on a Russian map
as being fit for wheels for a considerable
distance. It is difficult during two months
in summer, when fording is dangerous.
(28.) From Garm (route 23 above) via Childara to
Kala Khum is 70 or 80 miles according to
different estimates. The road is difficult.
(a.) A difficult pack road runs from Kala
Khum to Kulab, a distance of 118 miles.
(If.) From Kala Khum a bad and difficult
road runs along the right bank of the Ab-
i-Panjah (Oxus) via Kala Wamar to Kala
Bar Panja, a distance of 98 miles.
(c.) From Kala Bar Panja a route
follows the left bank of the Ab-i-Panjah as
far as Ishkashim and thence over the Hindu
