CHAPTER IX.—NAVAL AND MILITARY.
The total strength of cavalry in Seistan is 420 men, of whom 20 are
Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers.

In addition there are 596 sowars, or Janbazes (camel riders), as local
levies. Every village maintains 1 to 3 of these men, and they are only
drawn on in an emergency. These men are allowed a plough apiece free,
but they supply their own seed and keep up a pony. The infantry batta An extra allowance of pay granted to soldiers involved in special field service or to public servants on special duty.
lion ought to be 800 strong. It is one of the Birjand regiments and there
are hardly any Seistanis in the ranks. The regiments are changed periodi
cally between Birjand (and Seistau. The Sartip and Sarhang are sons of
the Amir Ali Khan.
The men have no uniforms and are a very ragged looking lot, armed
with muzzle-loaders.
There are said to be 30 gunners. The private's pay is supposed to be
7 tomans 10,000 Persian dinars, or a gold coin of that value. in cash and 2 kharwars of grain per annum. A gunner nomin
ally receives 16 tomans 10,000 Persian dinars, or a gold coin of that value. cash and 3 kharwars of grain per annum.
There are 6 guns in Nasratabad fort* where, practically all the troops are
stationed. There is a detachment at Sehkuha.
