Registan. It is a dry wa/tf-bed, except after heavy rain on the Koh-i-
Sultan, when the water rushes down in a torrent and it quickly dries
again. (Rootne.)
NILAGAN.—
A well of fairly good water in the bed of a ravine from the Karzak
Kaur It lies on the road from Meski on the Mashkel to Shandak, bet
ween the Amuri and Juli ravines, 11 miles from the former and 5 from
the latter place. {MacGregor.)
NILDIK KOH—Lat. 29° 16'; Long. 62° 40'; Elev. 4,500'.
The track from Amir Chah to Dalbandin passes £ mile to the north of
it at io$ miles. A solitary conical hill, standing up in the plain, vrell
away from the main range of Koh-i-Sultan.
The ground around its base is slightly undulating.
NIMIK PASS—
Between Koh-i-Sheikh Hussen and Lagharkoh. The ascent is very
easy, the gradient being approximately The highest point is only
150 feet above the level of the plain, and here the pass narrows to about
i,ooo feet. The ground is stony with scattered small bushes.
This pass could be avoided by going to the north of Lagharkoh, but the
soil is soft with an efflorescence of shora which would prove very heavy
going after wet weather. {Roome.)
NIZA-I-SULTAN—Lat. 29 0 to' ; Long. 62° 47'; Elev. 5,800'.
A peak of the Koh-i-Sultan, north of the nawar.
NODO—Lat. 28° 27' ; Long. 62° 8'; Elev.
A halting-place on the road from the Mashkel river to Amalaf in West
ern Baluchistan. It is the eighth stage from Jolushan and four stages
from Amalaf. There is some good well water here, and fuel and forage.
The Tahlab river rises here. {Webb-Ware?)
NOKCHAH—Lat. 29 0 6' ; Long. 63° io'; Elev.
A well about 6 miles south of Dholi and 10 miles south-west of
Butak. The water in it is said to he brackish and small in quantity.
Liable to be filled in with drifting sand. {Roome.)
NOKCHAH.—Lat. 29 0 33' ; Long. 63° 33' ; Elev. 3,069'.
A halting-place on the road from Nushki to Dalbandin, and 98^ miles
from former.

There are nine wells (four in disuse) ; water 25 feet to. 30 feet from
surface, 2 feet of water, and 3 feet diameter. The water is good.
The w r ells lie to the east and close to the sand-hill locally known as
Bazgaz and are marked by a couple of tamarisk trees.
There is an abundance of tagaz around serving for camel-grazing and
fuel. The camping-ground is unlimited.
There are signs of a former cultivation around here.
A track leads from here to Khargoshkhan, but it is difficult owing to
sand-hills. .
A track from Chagai to Kharan vii the Raloi Pass and Erikalag
passes through here. {Roome.)

Content

A report, marked as secret, on the area of Nushki, Chagai, and Western Sinjarani. The report was compiled in the Intelligence Branch, Quarter Master General's Department. The report was commenced in 1897 by Captain R E Roome, 6th Bombay Cavalry (Jacob's Horse), and revised and completed by Major W C Walton, 104th Wellesley's Rifles, Deputy Assistant Quarter Master General in 1903. It was printed at the Government Central Printing Office, Simla, in 1904.

The report includes a preface by Colonel John E Nixon, Assistant Quarter Master General, Intelligence Branch (folio 5) and a glossary of vernacular terms used (folio 6). The main body of the report contains chapters on geography, communications, fortified posts and forts, climate, sanitation, resources, ethnography, history, administration, and military strength.

The second part of the report includes a gazetteer of topographical and ethnographic information (folios 36-127) and appendices covering wells, canals, and meteorology, and including a report on the signalling stations of the Dalbandin-Robat line, with sketches (folios 131-147).

The volume includes the following maps:
