Simla, the 20 th June 1932,
My dear Walwyn,
As you will, no doubt, remember, there was a
£ reat correspondence last year about supplying the
Resident in the
Persian Gulf
The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran.
with a despatch vessel to
take him about on tour, which ended in the very expensive
arrangement of hiring a B.l. steamer for about seven
weeks. For financial reasons alone it is undesirable to
repeat this arrangement, while on the same grounds it is
out of the question at present to buy a vessel for the
exclusive use oi the Resident, He has therefore come
up again with the proposal that it might be possible to
put one of ouj sloops at his disposal for about eight
months in the year and has offered to pay us £s« 1 , 20 , 000 ,
if this can be done. The ship would be wanted from
about the middle of October to the middle of June; she
would not be kept at Bushire all the time waiting on the
Resident * s requirements, provided that she would be
available at reasonable notice; nor I think, would it be
necessary to keep the same sloop in the Gulf for the whole
eight months.
There are, of course, several obvious
objections to the proposal from our point of view. It
has been decided that the sphere of action of the Royal
Indian Marine should normally exclude the

, but
that it might be positively desirable to attach one of our
sloops to the Naval Force in the Gulf from time to time
for training. This is, no doubt, a different proposition
from that now put forward by the Resident; but my feeling
is that, in the present financial stringency, we should
do our best to give effect to a proposal that will be
mutually
