to Secretary of State for India, No 0 147o Secretary of state’s
telegram Noo719 of 26th February* "Patrick Stewart?
lc Chief conversion required would be (a) removal
of cable machinery; (b) conversion of one of existing cable
tanks to carry oil so as to increase radius of action; (c) some
alterations to superstructure to provide for large day cabin;
(cl) auxiliary engine to run light, eto®, when vessel not under
steam, in order to effect economy in fuel*
2o Vessel costing £30,000 would presumably be of
considerably smaller size, and very uncomfortable in rough
weather, of which we have a great deal in the Gulfo Even Patrick
Stewart* could make no progress and had to shelter three days
behind islands, and smaller ship would be worse from the point of
view of sea-worthiness, and also dignity of Resident in Arab eyes*
If, however, my presumption regards the size incorrect, then
specially built vessel would probably be more suitable and cheaper
in the long run*
3* Special arrangements for the Resident's transport
are, I submit, essential® I travelled recently in the "Folkestone ,v
Commander had to vacate his cabin® My Secretary was given camp
