'V ^ &C 2 . 16th February,
Dear Sir Louis,
C.S. "PATRICK STEWART".
With reference to your letter of the 30th
January on the subject of the "Patrick Stewart", we quite
agree that any suggestion regarding the Political Department
purchasing this vessel is entirely outside the question of
our taking her over from the Indo Department. It is probable
that we shall not make use of her as the maintenaiice of the
Persian Gulf
The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran.
Cables can be brought under our general arrange
ments for maintenance. Unfortunately, the builii anu general
type of the vessel preclude our using her for general mainten
ance, and should the Political Department desire to ma*.e an
offer we shall be pleased to consider, it*
Kef erring to the Meeting which took place
at the
India Office

on Thursday, the 5th February, w* gather
that it is probable that the "Patrick Stewart , which is at
present on a tour up the Gulf, may not be back at Karachi by
the end of Febraary. If such s^uld prove to be the case
we shall raise no objection to delay in handing her over pro
vided that the expenses of running the ship, to the eventu
date of handing over in Karachi, are borne by the Department.
