1/7/30.
I!y dear Laithwaite,
•Lliere are mary rumours floating round the Gulf
about the future of the Indo-European Telegraph Dept., and
the general impression seems to be that the inland wires will
shortly be handed over to the Persians, and the cables taken
over by the Communications Co. I asked de Smidt what, in this
event, would be the fate of the Patrick Stewart, and he said
that he thought whatever Company took over the cables would
keep on the ship, especially as she was now earning some money.
There are however now more rumours floating about to the
effect that the ship is going to be given up. Probably they
are untrue, but in case anything should be decided in T ondon
without reference to me I should like to let you know ry
views, and perhaps you could very kindly make enquiries from the
h-in-C. and let me know how the land lies. It is not necessar
to emphasise the necessity for the P.H. to have a yacht of
sorts. Personally I think I should throw in rry hand the day I
had got ry extra pension, i.e., the spring of 1932, if I had
not got a yacht, as I frankly could not run the Gulf by writing
letters in an office in Bushire, and should cease to tadce any
interest in the show. The P.S. as a cable ship is doubtless
worth a lot of money: if not employed as a cable ship I doubt
if she would fetch much more than ber break-up value, as she is
unsuited for commercial work. If no cable compary wants her it
seems to me that the 0. of I. could acquire her at an almost
nominal figure for the .P. The Crocus I believe fetched a
purely nominal sum. The P.S. costs 3 lakhs One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees a year to run, but
has an enormous crew, simply to deal with cable work, auxiliary
machinery/
