Daood Shah, whose arrival* had thus saved the Province of Toorkis-

463. Before his coming, Shere Ali’s cause in Toorkistan had been exposed
to another kind of danger from treachery in his own army. It was still full of
men who owed their fortunes to Abdool Rahman. The sowars were parti
cularly disaffected to Shere Ah, so when the Bokhara forces with Ishak among

. send them* to Koondooz, ostensibly
to be directed against Jehandar Shah of Budukshan, but really to be kept in
play there by the faithful Abdool Kureem Khan, till Daood Shah arrived,

sion to Budukshan will be mentioned further on, and as soon as they came back
were packed off to the number of 3,000 to Cabul. The artillery was also a

. adherents of Abdool Rahman; and as the
six regiments who had come up from Cabul consisted solely of infantry,
Daood Shah and Alum were compelled for a time to remain inactive till
further reinforcements came up from Cabul.
On receiving this information, the Ameer (19th August) sent off 1,000
cavalry levies, and (28th August) a regiment of regular cavalry under
Colonel Mehr Ali.
464. ^Meanwhile Jehandar Shah, of Budukshan, had missed an opportunity
when he might have been really dangerous. He had in a half-hearted way made
* Diary ending 19 th July. overtures* to Alum Khan, and had even
said he would come in and pay his respects
in person, if Alum would first of all send Lall Mahommed to enter into an
agreement. Lall Mahommed was, however, wanted for the work in Akchah
already mentioned, so Shahabooddeen was sent, and found that a messenger

the reply f that J ehandar Shah was willing
to give his allegiance and to send presents, but would not come in himself, and
would take flight if troops were sent to fetch him. This news w T as coupled
with another item of intelligence, that the Meer of Chitral had lately come
over, had married a Budukshan girl, and, after paying a visit to Jehandar Shah,
had returned to his own country.
The following extracts from the diaries of the 19th and 25th August 1869
show what course the Ameer determined to adopt in dealing with Budukshan :
“ *The territory of Koondooz, the assessment of which, excluding its dependencies, amounts

granted to Meer Sooltan Moorad Khan, on the
conditions (1) that he pay one lakh One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees of Rupees Indian silver coin also widely used in the Persian Gulf. this year, and fifty thousand annually in future
to the Cabul Government; and (2) that he furnish 1,000 cavalry for Toorkistan, and 200 cavalry
for his younger brother at Cabul. The Meer has agreed to these conditions, and will start for
Koondooz shortly.
“On the 25th August 1869 the Ameer dismissed Meer Mirza Jan, Budukshanee, and Meer
Sooltan Moorad Khan to Koondooz, after presenting them with suitable khilluts, and intimated
to the latter that, if he did not aid the former in withdrawing the management of Budukshan
from Meer Jehandar Shah, and in making over the same to him (Mirza Jan), troops would be
sent in the winter for the purpose. The Meer of Koolab has been directed to send Meer Mirza
Shah and Meer Mahmood Shah, Budukshanee, together with their families, to Toorkistan if
they are not prisoners/^
