632 The messenger who brought these letters to Cabul said that, in
answer to a request tor leave to enter Seistan, Alum Khan of Kain had told
lum that if he did so, he must leave the hulk of his troops behind; and that
Azacl Khan, of Kharan, had replied to a similar request, that, as an allv of the
Ameer, he could not. permit him to enter his territory with all his troops in
pursuance of his rebellious designs; but would willingly receive him if he
came with only, a few, and would intercede in his behalf with the Ameer.

633. To Uslum’s letter, Yacoob replied—

leave Afghanistan, I have to observe that I cannot rely on your representations, and
will not be reconciled unless His Highness the Ameer himself promises to meet my views. If
you intend to wage war with me before the receipt of a reply to the above letter from the
Ameer, you are at liberty to do so. I shall also oppose you as far as I can. I am not inclined
in any way to withdraw from Afghanistan.^
634. And now ITslum and Eeramoz drew closer in pursuit,* i. e., to
Ameer-i-Bulund.f Thence they proposed
that half their force should go to
strengthen Futteh Mahomed at Herat, as
it seemed possible that Yacoob might go
thither, via Khashrood. Meer Afzul Khan
of Furrah warnedJ: them of this danger,
and said that, owing to the character of the country about Shorawuk, Yacoob
could hardly proceed in that direction; but that if he made a dart on Herat,
Feramoz and Uslum would at Moolia Khan find themselves 40 days behind him.
