favour.
717. A week* later, Uslum, Feramoz, and Abdool Ali, tbe account-

. Ali Khan had collected from tbe people
of Girisbk and Zemeendawur four lakhs One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees of rupees Indian silver coin also widely used in the Persian Gulf. which they had not credited
to Government; that whereas Shere Ali solicited a reduction of two lakhs One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees in
the revenue demand of those two Districts, they proposed to lease them to the
people without any reduction at all. The Ameer replied he would see about
the change of malversation when all the accounts of the Province were received.
On the 31st March, however, he confirmed Shere Ali in the-Government of
Candahar— [Diary ending Zrd April]. On the 27th March, atta was reported
to be, 2^ seers, English, rice one seer, and barley 2J seers for the Candaharee
Mupee,—10 annas.
Colonel Phayre’s correspondent in Candahar confirmed this account, and
said that even at those prices grain was not to be had ; that the troops under
Sufdur Ali seized supplies as they came in, and that Shere Ali could not
keep those troops in bounds; that since the arrival of TTslum and Eeramoz the
local authorities at Candahar were paralyzed, that there were many deaths daily
from starvation; that, owing to the famine there, the Khelat exiles,—Noordeen
Minghul and Moolla Mahomed,—had quitted Candahar for Cabul; that—
“ twenty-seven men of influence, who were in confinement at Candahar on suspicion of
Colonel Phayre’s Political News Report, No. 462, having been concerned in Siidar Mnbomed Yacoob
dated 4th April 1871. (See his Docket No. 463 Khan^s rebellion, had been put to death by Feramoz
of the same date.) Khan, and 50 or 60 more are now in confinement.
Ten or twelve leading men of the city of Candahar, who were not arrested f6r fear of an out
break, had disappeared, and it was rumoured that they have been assassinated, so that there
was a feeling' of terror in the place •”
finally, that Eeramoz, failing in Iris' endeavours to bring in 14 or 15 influential
men from Zemeendawur, who were with Yacoob, had destroyed their forts, cut
down their orchards, and sold their property.
718. About the 17th March, 400 Belooch, under the command of a
nephew of Shah Pussund Khan, who was with Yacoob, had—
“made a raid into Candahar territory at Tungee, about 40 miles south of Candahar, on the
road between Candahar and Khelat, through
Colonel Pkayre’s Political News Report No. 462, Shorawuk and Mustoong, and had carried off 5,000

719. On the 5th June a report was received from Meerza Abdool Ali, to
the effect that eight lakhs One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees of Government revenue were due from Shere Ali,
Candaharee. The Ameer took no notice of the report at the time owing to
the disturbed condition of affairs.

720. The following items of Bokhara news, besides those which have
already found mention in their appropriate place in this summary, are to be
found here and there in the Cabul diaries, gathered by the British agent trom
his own correspondents, or from inlormation which reached the Ameer.
